Alec Zambie '21: Lubbock, Hawaii, and Prepared for College

After completing his Senior year at FWC, Alec signed to play basketball at LCU!

Alec Zambie is a 2021 graduate of Fort Worth Christian School and he just completed his freshman year at Lubbock Christian University where he is a member of their basketball team. The Chaps had an incredible season being ranked #1 in Division II polls for several weeks. They were a No. 1 seed in NCAA regionals which was the highest in program history. They entered the NCAA postseason with a 26-3 record, including 12-2 in Lone Star Conference play and a second-straight LSC regular-season title before bowing out in the NCAA semifinals.

Here’s a Q & A with Alec:

Looking back on your freshman year at Lubbock Christian University, what were some of the highlights?

Obviously, the great season we had was a highlight, but the friends I made and all the nights out with them were big to me. We’d go bowling, go to the lake, hang out in the dorms, eat, play sand volleyball, whatever it may be. It was always fun being around them. My favorite highlight though had to be the Hawaii tournament with the team. We got to play a few games and then have a few days off in Hawaii. Who wouldn’t love that? Certainly a top memory of the year for me.

What was the hardest transition from high school to college?

I definitely think FWC prepared me well for college so there weren't any major transitions to make. One thing though would be time management. Classes aren’t all day so you have lots of free time and it is easy to put aside your homework and forget about it. It’s good to have a consistent schedule and set aside time for work.

What are you majoring in and what was your favorite class?

Since Lubbock Christian is a small university, they don’t have a full engineering program. So I am majoring in math and after I complete my four years here, I will go to another college to finish my engineering degree. My favorite class so far has been Sociology because it is something that I have not learned about before so the information was fascinating to me.

Did FWC prepare you for college?

For sure. I was challenged in the classroom at FWC, but when I got to my first semester classes at LCU I felt ahead of everyone else. Some people were still getting used to college but I felt like I had been there before. I was on top of my schoolwork most of the time and never really had any issues in the classroom. FWC prepared me well in my opinion.

What a favorite memory from your time at FWC?

My favorite memory has to be the basketball team and the run we made. Not only was I new, but so was Coach Mawire. We were able to have an outstanding season and made tons of memories with the guys. I wish I had another year with them. All the trips we went on and meals we had together created bonds with guys I’ll remember for a while.

What FWC teacher, coach, or staff member had the most impact on you and why?

Only being there for a year limited the number of staff members I was able to get close with but Mr. Baur comes to mind. He was someone I could go to to talk about whatever with him whether that be school or personal things. Towards the end of the school year when I was having trouble with choosing what to do after high school, he was someone I went to to get advice from. He was someone I could go to if I had anything on my mind.

What is your favorite Bible verse(s) and what has it meant to you?

My favorite verse would have to be 1 Thessalonians 5:18. It says “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” I like this verse a lot because even through hard times we have to thank the Lord. Everything that we do we should give thanks as this is what is planned for us. Through our ups and our downs just find a reason to be thankful as this is His will.

For prospective students considering FWC, what would you share with them about the school based on your experience?

I have experienced big schools, small schools, private schools, and public schools. If you’re even thinking about attending Fort Worth Christian, do it. The teachers have a strong connection with every student whether they teach you or not, and the relationships with other students are something you won’t be able to find somewhere else. If FWC is an option for you, I highly recommend you choose them.
