- Class of 2000-2004
Scott Symons earns spot on Top Coaches List
Scott Symons, '04, who is in his second year leading Liberty University Flame's defensive effort as Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach, has been named a nominee for the 2020 Broyles Award. The Broyles Award is an annual award given to honor the best assistant coach in college football. There are only 56 college coaches on this year's list. The 56 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,270 assistant coaches representing 127 Division I programs across the country.
The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches.
A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semifinalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner. Some of the notable head coaches on the selection committee include former Grant Teaff, Barry Switzer, Bobby Bowden, Bob Stoops, RC Slocum, Steve Spurrier, and Urban Meyer. The Broyles Award was created in 1996 recognizing Coach Frank Broyles' legacy of selecting and developing great assistants during his hall of fame career as head coach at Arkansas.
During his 6 years at FWC, Scott was on the A-B Honor Roll all 4 years, involved in Student Council, NHS, and FCA. He participated in basketball, soccer, track, and football, where he was named 2nd Team All-State. Scott went on to play for Lindenwood University where he played outside linebacker from 2004-07 and earned his bachelor's degree in history. Scott went on to have high school and college coaching positions, including at Arkansas State, Arkansas Tech, West Georgia, and Memphis before being hired in 2019 by Liberty University.
Scott married his wife, Kristen, in 2008. They have 3 children, Peyton, Hudson, and Rhett.
Congratulations, Scott, Class of 2004!
