Cardinal Learning Center

Our Lower School Students who do not need Language Therapy, but still have learning challenges, can participate in our Learning Center/Testing center. A qualified Learning Specialist will work with these students on their social, emotional, and organizational needs that are standing in the way of their academic success. 

• Helping them to identify the habits and behaviors they have developed to hide or minimize their Learning Differences 

• Create better habits that lead to greater self-confidence. 

• The Testing Center will be for those students who benefit from a quiet place to test as well as extra time (time and a half) to complete tests or quizzes.  This service requires accompanying diagnostics for a Learning Difference. (ADHD, ADD, anxiety, etc.)

FEE:  $1000 Testing Center only - as needed for tests and quizzes

Middle School Directive Studies is a scheduled class time for the entire school year where the Middle School students come to the class to learn executive functioning skills, as well as to receive academic support. This class will replace an optional elective class. 

Within the classroom time the Learning Specialist will:

• Work with each student in a dedicated/scheduled class time consistently throughout the week 

• Provide skill support and development in test-taking, studying, and organization

• Provide weekly academic progress monitoring

• Assist the student in weekly assignment priority planning 

• Train the student in self-advocacy (Teaching them to advocate for themselves as a student with teachers, administrators, etc.) 

• Be a dedicated liaison between classroom teacher(s) and support (when appropriate) 

• Be a dedicated liaison between parent(s) and school (when appropriate) 

• Be a dedicated case manager for overall academic progress. This includes weekly checking of grades, keeping up with any missing assignments, and training students to be proactive with teachers when assignments are missing or incomplete 

• Provide a collaborative, individualized educational accommodation plan that will adjust as the student progresses throughout the year   

• Provide standardized testing accommodations for students with an official accommodation plan  

• Train students to understand their own learning style and work to make their study skills stronger 

• Work collaboratively with Counselor to identify emotional needs associated with their Learning Differences and help them learn to work through that

• Provide content/homework help as time permits

$1,850 Directed Studies - Includes testing center and a regular class period during the zero hour

$1000 Testing Center only - as needed for tests and quizzes

The Upper School Directed Studies class supports students in the completion of academic tasks assigned in their regular scheduled classes. This class allows students time to bring general education assignment questions to class in order to support assignment completion.  This differs from a homework center/study hall in that students receive periodic direct instruction in organization, learning, and study strategies, as well as counseling in self-advocacy.  Through this class, students are provided the opportunity to work with their Learning Specialist on a consistent basis, to support Individual Education Plan goals and general education academic success. This class provides an additional elective credit toward their High School transcript.

Dyslexia Therapy/ Academic Language Therapy

Academic Language Therapy is the diagnostic and prescriptive application of Multi-sensory Structured Language to mitigate or remediate written-language disorders, including dyslexia. This service is offered to our k-5th grade students as a one-on-one individual basis, and for the Middle School there is a small group option as well as individual one-on-one option. 

Academic language means that instruction offered to individuals is educational and emphasizes the teaching of reading, spelling, handwriting, and written expression. Therapy indicates that the instruction is intensive and therapeutic rather than tutorial. Students receiving academic language therapy are taught the structure of the English language from its simplest to its most complex form. 

Multi-sensory Structured Language (terms which are often used interchangeably) includes the teaching of phonology, phonics, orthography, morphology-etymology, semantics, and syntax. These components are taught through an explicit, systematic, sequential, cumulative, and repetitive manner.

FEE:

Lower School: 
$4000 - 45 minutes 4 times a week

Middle School: 
$2500 - 45 minutes 4 times a week (Small Group)
$4000 - 45 minutes 4 times a week (Individual) 

TESTING CENTER STUDENT ACCOMMODATIONS (ALL LEVELS)

The Cardinal Learning Center accommodations include a dedicated testing center where those with learning differences can come to take tests in a quiet room with extended time.

Student accommodations are tools and procedures that provide equal access to instruction and assessment for a student. Accommodations level the playing field for students by reducing or eliminating the effects of the student’s disability.
