The Fort Worth Christian Board of Trust is thrilled to announce Dr. Misty Overman as our new Head of School

February 26, 2020

Dear FWC Community,

After a thoughtful nationwide search and prayerful consideration, we are tremendously excited to introduce Fort Worth Christian’s new Head of School. Last week, on Thursday evening, the members of the Board of Trust unanimously voted to appoint Dr. Misty Overman to the position, beginning June 1, 2020.

When we embarked on this search in December, we knew that our ideal candidate had to have a deep understanding of 21st-century educational best practices and a passionate commitment to integrated, Christ-centered education. In addition, our next Head of School would have to support our faculty and their professional growth, understand and appreciate the perspectives of our parents, and build and maintain relationships throughout the FWC community. Dr. Overman embodies these traits; more importantly, she understands and embraces our unique culture.

In accepting the position, Dr. Overman shared her appreciation and enthusiasm for FWC: “Never before in our society has Fort Worth Christian’s mission been more relevant – or needed.  I feel blessed to be given the opportunity to lead this school at this time – a school that upholds Biblical truths and empowers its young people with a strong foundation in their faith while  it simultaneously offers a rich breadth and depth of academic programming. The future of Fort Worth Christian is bright and the path ahead – as articulated in FWC’s Vision: Forward strategic plan is clear and exciting.  I am eager to take up the mantle that is being passed on to me—to honor the history and traditions of FWC as we continue to work to fulfill the strategic plan—and I look forward to continuing to strengthen FWC’s position as a leader in Christ-centered academic excellence.”

The Board is confident that Dr. Misty Overman is the right person to lead our school.

Dr. Overman began her career in the classroom and has gained impressive administrative experience over the past three decades. She is currently in her fifth year as Head of School at Alabama Christian Academy, a coeducational, Christ-centered college preparatory school with 750 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Before she became Head of School, she was vice president of learning initiatives at Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC), with oversight for curriculum alignment and development, faculty professional development, 1:1 student technology integration, and academic support programs for learning differences. “Dr. Overman is a leader, nurturer, visionary, and accountability partner to subordinates and colleagues,” said the Head of School at GAC. “She remains one of the most innovative leaders I’ve known — always ready and asking for that next opportunity to advance learning, the school, and others.”

The Board’s enthusiastic decision to appoint Dr. Overman was based on the recommendation of the Head of School Search Committee (made up of FWC teachers, administrators, parents and Board members).  The search process was extensive: the committee reviewed materials from a diverse and experienced set of more than 50 candidates, then invited seven individuals to meet with its members early this month. After the initial round of interviews, two finalists were selected to visit the FWC campus to participate in more extensive conversations with the Committee and with members of the Board of Trust.  After careful and thoughtful deliberation, the Search Committee concluded that Dr. Overman is ideally suited to lead FWC and to propel our school onward in pursuit of our Vision: Forward strategic plan. We are grateful for the tireless efforts and careful consideration of the Search Committee throughout the entire process and thank them for their good work in identifying our next leader.

The Search Committee shared the following in their recommendation of Dr. Overman:  “We believe the Fort Worth Christian community should feel incredibly blessed and excited to have Dr. Misty Overman leading our school into the next decade. Within the candidate search process, our committee received one glowing recommendation after another from heads of school across the country praising Dr. Overman's leadership abilities and integrity. After meeting her in person, we were convinced that she possessed the experience, wisdom, passion, and diligence necessary to guide FWC over the coming years of change and growth. She is especially well-suited to facilitate the school’s Vision: Forward strategic plan and continue the good work Ken Cheeseman began in solidifying FWC's future as one of the premier Christ-centered, college preparatory schools in the DFW metroplex.”

Mark Baur, member of the Search Committee and FWC Bible Department, elaborated: “Dr. Overman will be drawing on 34 years of experience in the education sector as a teacher, principal, vice president of learning initiatives, and head of school. We have full confidence that her years of experience in schools like Alabama Christian and Greater Atlanta Christian have given Dr. Overman the vision she needs to pursue excellence as the next FWC Head of School. She is an answer to so many prayers our community has lifted up in recent months, and I am excited to follow her lead in the good work of empowering young people for a lifetime of faith, service, and leadership for Christ."

The selection of Head of School is one of the greatest responsibilities of trusteeship. On behalf of the Search Committee and the Board of Trust, I want to express our profound optimism and excitement about the future of Fort Worth Christian School under the leadership of Dr. Misty Overman.

Dr. Overman will be on campus during the week of March 16th to be introduced to the FWC community (further details will be shared next week).

As we finish the academic year, FWC will be well served by Ken Cheeseman for the remainder of this school year and through the month of July, and Dr. Overman will be joining FWC as of June 1, in order to effect a smooth and steady transition.  In the meantime, the Board of Trust will identify additional opportunities to introduce Dr. Overman and her husband more fully to our community in the coming months. I know you will join us in giving them a warm welcome.

In His service,

John Feray
Chair, Board of Trust
