To: All Athletes' Moms:
I am so happy that you are considering being a part of our Locker Room Prayer Moms group. I am a firm believer that prayer is a powerful tool that God has graciously provided us to petition for our children through His Spirit. Athletics is a wonderful arena to grow our kids both physically and spiritually. How awesome it will be for us moms to gather together to cover our children before their competition. Matthew 18:20 tells us For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.
First things first, if you have not already dedicated your child to the Lord, I suggest you do that before our first meeting. I base this request from Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:27-28 For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of Him. So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord. I think it is very important to acknowledge that our children are God’s gifts to us, and He is the ultimate Parent. He has allowed us to raise His little babies and entrusted their physical lives to us to cherish. It is our duty to cover them in prayer, and God’s loving-kindness to reach down and answer according to His will.
I cannot be there for every sport, so I will ask that a sport mom will step up to just simply facilitate the prayer time. This will not be a grueling job. I promise. Also, I want to make sure all the kids are covered; so in case a mom cannot make it, which will happen, I would ask for a surrogate mom to step in to pray for that child that week. This can be another mom or even someone that his/her Mom wants to send to the prayer time that day. We will meet in the locker room that your child uses to get ready for their competition. If there is a sport which does not have lockers, the moms can gather in a quiet place of their choice. This will NOT be a social time. This will be a time to come together and seriously petition God for your child. Please respect this time. The facilitator will begin each time praying 2 Chronicles 6:40 Now, O my God, I pray Thee, let Thine eyes be open, and Thine ears be attentive to the prayer offered in this place. Afterwards, each mom will quietly go to her child’s locker and kneel, sit, lie, stand, however you feel comfortable and pray scripture over your child from the prayer card you will have. At the bottom of the card is a place to offer up any personal prayer you have for your child. The prayer card is a guide only. You can stay as long as you feel led. When you are finished, you may quietly leave.
There is another prayer opportunity as well for varsity athletes. Would you prayerfully consider becoming a Prayer Warrior for one to three athletes? You would dedicate yourself to pray for these athletes throughout the week according to a scripture that will be emailed to you at the beginning of the week. By Friday, I ask that you write, preferably handwrite, a letter of encouragement to each one letting them know what you have been praying for that week. You will not sign your name, only ... Your Cardinal Prayer Warrior. You may drop it off at the field house or high school office before 9:00 am on Friday morning. They will be collected and placed in the lockers that morning. I would like to keep them anonymous to truly honor God. Please approach this prayfully, it DOES require a commitment on your part each week of the season. Prayer Warrior names will not be shared nor revealed at the end of the season. It is simply a sweet time to lift up our FWC athletes to God and bless our athletes with a letter of encouragement to let them know they are being prayed for.
Thank you for taking the time to read this information letter. Please be praying that Satan will be bound. This kind of prayer coverage will make him very nervous and he will be prowling around seeking those to devour. (1 Peter 5:8) He will make great effort to interfere every time we meet. If you have been in a study or prayer group you know what I mean. Now I ask that you pray and seek God’s counsel if either of these opportunities would interest you. John 16:24 Until now you have asked for nothing in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy will be made full.
In His name,
Charlotte Smiley
