Both vocal and instrumental music is offered at several levels at Fort Worth Christian School. All students in grades K-4 are in a music class while those in grade 5 have the option of taking band instead of music. The curriculum for grades K-3 includes understanding of basic musical notations, familiarity of musical terms, recognition of music alphabet, understanding of treble clef notation on lines and spaces, and introduction to time signatures and key signatures.
Fourth graders begin using the recorder and begin working on choral technique and structure and study a section on music history. Fifth graders continue with music history and music theory with an introduction to musical theater.
Sixth and seventh graders have the opportunity of participating in beginning chorus and study music theory, music history, singing technique, and are involved in performances.
The strings program at FWC provides students an opportunity to learn one of the four orchestral stringed instruments - violin, viola, cello, or bass - in an ensemble setting. Different levels and class times are offered to meet scheduling needs. Classes for beginners and experienced players are offered before or after school. In middle and high school, strings may be taken as an elective for fine arts credit, or students may continue in the before and after school classes.
Students are given several performance opportunities each year, including two major recitals. Other performances include chapel programs, Grandparents' Day program, Northeast Mall, Pride of Texas Music Festival, Celebration Dinner, UTA Solo and Ensemble Festival, and TAPPS district and state competitions.
Playing in an ensemble develops important listening and cooperative skills, along with fine motor development. We are pleased to provide this opportunity for students to find and develop a God-given talent and experience the joy of giving their best to God and to others in performance.
The fifth grade band plays its concerts with the middle school and high bands once a Semester and during chapel time at the elementary school. The program focuses on basic instrumental technique which includes posture, breathing, note reading, and concert repertoire. Starting band in the fifth grade level is important because, by the sixth grade, students are expected to have the working skills of playing their instrument.
The band program from the sixth grade through high school serves as a Middle School and High School Concert Band and a combined Pep Band playing for Football Games, Basketball Games, Pep Rallies. The Cardinal Band Program also participates in formal concerts and contests through TAPPS and UIL
